Preliminary research

In the preliminary that we will produce we will need to take into account continuity editing, the 180 degree rule, reverse shots and match on action. The result will be a short film, probably a couple of minutes long that include all of the above aspects. We will use continuity editing as it is the most used and makes sense to use.

Continuity editing is a form of editing that maintains the chronological order of events. This makes it easier to follow the narrative as it goes in order so you don’t have to think about the order in which the scenes you are watching are in. Furthermore continuity editing make the scenes and different cuts flow into each other. This makes the gaps and scene changes less noticeable. Continuity editing can be split into two different categories, temporal and spatial cutting. Temporal cutting connects shots to support the development of the narrative as well as establishing the progression of time. On the other hand spatial cutting uses different camera angles and framing to create a unified space. This is done through the use of an establishing shot to show the surroundings of the space in the scene and to give the viewer some spatial awareness of objects and people in the scene.

The 180 degree rule is also used in spatial editing. This is where a camera cannot cross the line of action. This is so the camera is on the same side of the character and that the audience see’s that the characters are looking in the same direction and therefore, at the other character. If the camera were to break the 180 degree rule the camera would be on the other side of the character and would confuse and probably disorientate the audience. In spatial editing shot and reverse shots are used. This is  most commonly used when two characters are talking to each other. This gives the impression that the characters are talking to each other, POV or over the shoulder shots are usually used for this.

Another technique used in spatial editing is match on action. This is when two different shots of the same action are edited together to make it look like the movement carried on uninterrupted. This aids the style of continuity editing as it continues the pace of the scene. On the other hand other types of editing reuses the same shots to exaggerate the action. Collectively all of these techniques form the basis of continuity editing. They do this by making the cuts near invisible to the audience as well as maintaining spatial awareness.

I think one of the most important things in film making as it defines how a production will be shown and delivered to the audience. In addition continuity editing makes the film more realistic and similar to our reality. This makes the things the audience see’s on screen easier to understand as opposed to something that is completely foreign to the audience.
